The 3 Main Benefits of Joist Tape: A Must-Have for Your Decking Project

When it comes to deck construction and similar external projects exposed to the elements attention to detail can make a significant difference in the longevity and performance of a structure.

One often-overlooked component is joist tape. This simple yet effective product can enhance the durability of your framing, prevent moisture damage, and improve the overall quality of your work. Let’s explore the benefits of using joist tape in your projects.

1. Moisture Protection

One of the primary functions of joist tape is to provide a barrier against moisture. Any kind of wood is susceptible to rot, mold, and decay when exposed to water, and joists are often in contact with damp environments. By applying joist tape to the top of joists, you create a waterproof barrier that prevents moisture from seeping into the wood. This added protection extends the lifespan of your framing and reduces the risk the structural integrity being affect prematurely.

1. Reduced Risk of Wood Rot

Joist tape acts as a protective layer that significantly lowers the risk of wood rot. By preventing moisture infiltration, it helps maintain the structural integrity of your joists. This is especially important in areas with high humidity or where water exposure is frequent, such as decks and porches. Keeping wood dry is essential for a long-lasting structure.

2. Cost

Investing in joist tape is a cost-effective way to enhance the durability and longevity of your construction. The relatively low cost of joist tape compared to the potential expenses of repairs from water damage makes it a smart choice. By preventing problems before they occur, you save money and effort in the long run.

3. Time Efficiency

A popular product before the use of joist tape was bitumen paint which was painted onto the top of the joists to provide added protection. Although better than none at all this method does have it downside. If you have ever used this method you will know how messy it is.

To reduce the risk of the paint going onto the boards or the clients property you will need to give it plenty of time to set before installing the boarding and therefore holding up the project. Not necessarily and big deal for the DIYer but for a commercial installer - TIME IS MONEY.

The boards can be installed immediately after the joist tape is installed reducing the overall project time.
